Merrick offered Bowman a 20-acre site in Coral Gables to build what would become the flagship of luxury in South Florida.
In a 50/50 partnership, no expense was spared. The 16-story Biltmore Hotel was completed in just 10 months after construction began in March 1925. When it opened in January 1926, it attracted Hollywood celebrities, Wall Street elites, European aristocracy, and political leaders. For the next several months, the Biltmore was one of the most fashionable destinations in the world.
The Biltmore Hotel Lifestyle: Pools, Golf, and Gondolas
What made the Biltmore Hotel so extraordinary was not only its architecture, but the lifestyle it offered.
At the time, it featured the largest swimming pool in the world, creating a glamorous resort atmosphere unlike anything else in the region. Guests also enjoyed two 18-hole golf courses, adding to the property’s prestige and leisure appeal.
Bowman, a passionate huntsman, introduced fox hunting as another attraction. He imported hundreds of red foxes from northern Virginia and assembled a team of hounds from across the South. Guests and residents could join regular fox hunts using horses from the hotel stables.
Merrick added a more romantic touch. He imported 25 gondolas from Venice, along with 30 young Italian gondoliers. Guests could ride through the canals to Tahiti Beach on Biscayne Bay, where they spent the day dancing to a live orchestra, relaxing by the water, and enjoying an elegant coastal escape.
The 1926 Hurricane and the Biltmore Hotel Legacy
In September 1926, the devastating hurricane known as "The Big Blow" changed the course of the Biltmore’s history. The storm destroyed Merrick financially and forced him to sell his ownership interest in the hotel.
Even so, the Biltmore’s glamorous success continued under new owner Henry Latham Doherty. Throughout the 1930s, the hotel remained a symbol of luxury and sophistication until Doherty’s death and America’s entrance into World War II.
